Nitrification in the Course of Ecological Succession

چکیده

tivorous fishes), serious disruption of the previous community structure, and a rapid shift toward smaller-bodied zooplankton. The morphological changes seen in Bosmina are not peculiar to Frains Lake. The occurrence of longer mucro spines on late-glacial Bosmina or Eubosmina has been reported in sediment from Langsee, Austria (Frey 1955), Esthwaite Water, England (Goulden 1964), the Grosser Segeberger See, West Germany (Hoffman 1977), Linsley Pond and Rogers Lake, Connecticut (Austin 1942, Deevey 1942, 1969). According to Thienemann (1950), the long-spined Eubosmina longispina was a typical member of the European glacial "mischfauna." Subsequently, this species was replaced by a sequence of forms, Eubosmina longispina to E. coregoni kessleri to E. c. coregoni, which progressively moved toward mucrones. As in the case of Bosmina, since the modern analogs of the Eubosmina occur in lakes of different trophic status, with Eubosmina characteristic of oligotrophic conditions and E. c. coregoni characteristic of eutrophic conditions (Patalas and Patalas 1966), the replacement sequence has generally been interpreted as representing succession toward eutrophication. Yet the same sequence can be interpreted to reflect a gradual increase of planktivorous fish activity, which results in the reduction or removal of large-bodied predatory copepods.

Nitrification Potentials in Primary and Secondary Succession'

Potential nitrogen mineralization and nitrification were measured in soils from a primary successional sequence developed on sand dunes and from a secondary successional sequence on old fields. Potential nitrogen mineralization in soils from the primary sere increased through the first five stages and then leveled off. Nitrogen mineralization was relatively constant in soils from the secondary ...

Biostratigraphy and paleo-ecological reconstruction on Scleractinian reef corals of Rupelian-Chattian succession (Qom Formation) in northeast of Delijan area

In this research, biostratigraphy and paleo-ecological reconstruction of the Qom Formation deposits in Bijegan village, northeast ofDelijan, are discussed. The studied section is situated in the western margin of the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic arc (the intra-arc basin). The Qom Formation deposits at the studied area are Rupelian-Chattian in age. Larger benthic foraminifers are used for biostratigr...

Nitrification in the hyporheic zone of a desert stream ecosystem

Nitrification in the hyporheic zone of Sycamore Creek, a Sonoran Desert stream, was examined, focusing on the association between respiration and nitrate production. Subsurface respiration in Sycamore Creek is highest in regions of hydrologic downwelling where organic matter derived from the stream surface is transported into the hyporheic zone. Similarly, nitrification was closely related to h...

Factors Regulating Nitrification in Primary and Secondary Succession'

A six-point primary sere developed on sand dunes and a four-point secondary sere developed on old fields were studied to examine the regulation of nitrification in succession. Soils from sites along the seres were incubated in funnel-microlysimeters leached weekly with NH4CI and other nutrient solutions. Nitrate output in soils from the five youngest sites along the primary sere was rapidly sti...

تغییر در توزیع فراوانی آشیان اکولوژیک گونه‌های گیاهی در طی مراحل مختلف توالی

Variation along the successional stage of a plant community is not limited to plant composition and diversity but also related to nutrient resources and plant species abundance distribution. Therefore, the use of models that consider the distribution of ecological niches in addition to the relative frequency of species in the distribution of species is also important. The object of current stud...
